In a world where we are constantly surrounded by screens, notifications and things demanding our attention, finding a hobby that encourages us to slow down can make a real difference.
Embroidery is one of those hobbies.
There is something wonderfully simple about sitting down with a piece of fabric, a needle and some thread. You have one small stitch to focus on, then another, and another. Before long, you can find yourself completely absorbed in what you're doing, with the noise of everyday life pushed into the background.
Whether you're completely new to embroidery or you've been stitching for years, it can be a lovely way to create a little more calm in your day.

If you're looking for a relaxing hobby to try at home, here are some of the ways embroidery can support your mental wellbeing — and why it makes such a wonderful pastime.
1. Embroidery encourages you to slow down
We don't always realise how quickly we move through our days. We're checking emails, scrolling through our phones, switching between tasks and thinking about what needs to happen next.
Embroidery asks you to do the opposite.
You can't really rush a stitch. You have to bring the thread through the fabric, place the needle where you want it, pull it through and repeat. The process naturally slows you down.
That slower pace can feel like a welcome change from the constant stimulation of everyday life. Even spending 20 or 30 minutes stitching can give you a chance to step away from your usual routine and simply concentrate on something in front of you.
You don't need to finish a whole project in one sitting, either. In fact, part of the joy of embroidery is knowing that your project will still be there tomorrow.
2. It gives your mind something gentle to focus on
One of the things I love most about embroidery is how absorbing it can be.
When you're concentrating on following a pattern, counting stitches or choosing where to place your next one, your attention is focused on the present moment. There's less room for all those little thoughts competing for your attention.
This is one reason embroidery can feel so relaxing.
It isn't necessarily about completely switching your mind off. Instead, it's about giving your mind something gentle and repetitive to concentrate on.

The rhythm of stitching can become almost meditative: in, out, pull through, repeat.
For many people, that feeling of being completely absorbed in a creative activity is exactly what makes embroidery such a comforting hobby.
3. Repetitive stitching can feel calming
There is something very satisfying about repetition.
Many embroidery stitches involve repeating the same movement over and over, whether you're working rows of satin stitch, following a line with backstitch or filling an area with tiny stitches.
That repetition can create a lovely rhythm.
Much like other slow, repetitive crafts, embroidery gives you a simple process to follow without requiring you to constantly make complicated decisions. Once you've settled into a stitch, you can often let yourself become absorbed in the movement.
And sometimes that's exactly what you need after a busy day.
4. It gives you a break from screens
Most of us spend a huge amount of time looking at screens. Phones, laptops, tablets and televisions have become part of everyday life, both at work and at home.
Embroidery offers a wonderfully low-tech alternative.
There are no notifications to check and no endless scrolling. Just fabric, thread and a needle.
Putting your phone down and picking up your embroidery can create a small boundary between you and the digital world. You might stitch while listening to music or a podcast, or simply enjoy the quiet.
Even a short screen-free break can feel refreshing.

5. Making something with your hands feels rewarding
There is something special about creating something physical from a handful of simple materials.
You start with a blank piece of fabric and a few strands of thread. Slowly, a picture begins to appear.
Perhaps it's a flower, a landscape, an animal or something completely unique to you.
As the design takes shape, you can see your progress in front of you. And when you finally finish, you have something tangible that you made yourself.
That sense of achievement can be incredibly satisfying.
Embroidery doesn't have to be perfect to be worthwhile, either. In fact, I think some of the charm of handmade embroidery comes from those little imperfections. Every stitch is yours.
If you're new to stitching, starting with a beginner-friendly embroidery kit can be a lovely way to discover the hobby without having to gather lots of materials yourself.

6. It encourages creativity without pressure
Creative hobbies are often associated with producing something beautiful, but I don't think embroidery needs to be about that.
You don't need to consider yourself "creative" to enjoy stitching.
You don't need to design your own patterns or know every stitch under the sun. You can simply choose a design you love and follow the instructions.
And when you do feel like experimenting, embroidery gives you plenty of opportunities to be creative. You can play with colours, change stitches, add your own details or personalise a design.
There are no rules saying you have to do it a certain way.
If you already have some experience with embroidery and want to try a new design, digital embroidery patterns are another simple way to find your next project.
Sometimes having an activity where the only goal is to enjoy the process — rather than produce something perfect — can be a refreshing change.
7. Embroidery gives you something to look forward to
Having a hobby can create small moments of anticipation in your day.
Maybe you have an hour free in the evening and decide to spend it stitching. Perhaps you take your embroidery with you while travelling or keep it beside your favourite chair ready for when you have a spare few minutes.
Those little rituals can become something to look forward to.
And embroidery is particularly easy to pick up and put down. You don't have to dedicate an entire afternoon to it. Five minutes of stitching is still five minutes of stitching.
Over time, those small moments can add up to a lovely creative routine.

8. It can help you practise being present
Mindfulness is often described as paying attention to the present moment rather than getting caught up in thoughts about the past or future.
You don't have to sit cross-legged and meditate to experience a little of that.
Sometimes, mindfulness can look like sitting quietly with your embroidery and paying attention to what you're doing.
Notice the colour of the thread.
Notice the texture of the fabric.
Notice the movement of the needle.
Notice the shape appearing as you stitch.
You might find yourself becoming less focused on everything else you need to do and more focused on the small task in your hands.
For me, that's one of the most lovely things about embroidery. It gives you permission to slow down and simply be where you are.

9. There's a sense of progress and accomplishment
When life feels busy, it can sometimes be difficult to see the progress we're making. Embroidery makes progress visible.
You can look at your project and see exactly how far you've come.
A few stitches become a flower. A flower becomes a section of the design. Eventually, the whole piece is finished.
That gradual process can be incredibly satisfying.
And because embroidery is usually made up of small, manageable steps, you can focus on one little section at a time rather than worrying about the finished piece.
One stitch at a time really is enough.
Finding your own relaxing embroidery routine
If you're looking for a relaxing hobby, you don't need to make embroidery another thing to add to your to-do list.
There is no need to stitch for a certain number of hours or finish a project by a particular date.
Instead, try creating a small ritual that feels enjoyable to you.
Put on your favourite playlist. Make yourself a cup of tea. Find a comfortable spot and pick up your embroidery.
Start with just a few stitches.
You might stitch for ten minutes before bed, spend a Sunday afternoon working on a project, or keep your embroidery nearby for those moments when you have a little spare time.
The important thing is that it feels like time for you — not another task you have to complete.
Embroidery doesn't have to be perfect
Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that embroidery is supposed to be enjoyable.
Your stitches might not all be identical. Your thread might tangle. You might accidentally make a mistake and have to undo a few stitches.
That's okay.
You don't need perfect stitches to enjoy the process.
The real value can be in sitting down, slowing down and making something with your hands.
So if you've been looking for a relaxing hobby to try, why not pick up a needle and thread?
You might discover that a few simple stitches are all it takes to create a little more calm in your day.
And if you fall in love with it, you may just find yourself looking forward to your next stitching session.
One stitch at a time.
